Ben & Sophie’s Honeymoon in Portugal – Our Customers Say
In Our Customer’s Say Blog Series, you have the voice! Ben and Sophie chose Portugal for their Honeymoon destination. Read all about their romantic getaway in sunny Europe here…
We started planning this romantic Honeymoon for Tori’s daughter and her now son-in-law months before the wedding. They knew they wanted Portugal as the destination, because Tori had amazing experiences in the country in the past. And, coincidence or not, the wedding photographer was also Portuguese!
We enjoyed every moment when planning this trip. Besides being a honeymoon which is already so unique to plan, Portugal is also one of our favorite “secret” gems in Europe. Not to mention our co-founder Marilia is Portuguese and she knew exactly how to make this trip so special.
Portugal is very diverse with striking nature, romantic villages and welcoming people. Ben and Sophie visited key cities and stayed in exquisite resorts and hotels.
We made sure they had everything they needed so that they could relax and enjoy their first days as a married couple with no worries in sight.
Obidos & Alcobaca
The first night in Portugal was spent in a coastal resort just outside Lisbon, the capital.
The next day they explored the little village of Obidos. A labyrinth of cobbled-stoned streets surrounded by a 1000-year-old wall, with towers, battlements and gates.
Alcobaca’s Monastery was their next stop for the day. A 12th-century gothic monument that is now a UNESCO World heritage Site.
After a calm couple days in the smaller villages, it was time to head to the buzzing city of Lisbon. One of the coolest in the world, some say.
From enjoying a drink with jaw-dropping views over the river and the city’s seven hills (without even leaving the hotel!), to the classic Gloria funicular and the warm nights in Bairro Alto. The newlyweds surely enjoyed the best Lisbon had to offer.
Cascais & Sintra
With their rental car, Ben and Sophie drove to Sintra. Their local guide made sure they didn’t miss the spectacular coastal road that passes by Cascais on their way up to the mountain of Sintra.
A quick stop in Cascais means is time for one of the locals’ favorite spot: Santini. An ice-cream shop famous for their artisanal and curious flavors. It’s said to be one of the best in Portugal!
We made sure the itinerary was flexible enough so that Ben and Sophie could explore as they pleased.
For a romantic afternoon in Sintra we suggested the Regaleira Palace. Time passes by while you delve into the gardens and imagine how it once was the royal family’s Summer retreat.
The second largest city in the country with a blossoming cultural, food and Arts scene.
During the 3-hour drive to Porto, they had the opportunity to visit Fatima – one of the most important shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary – and Batalha – which has a magnificent gothic monastery built in the 14th-century.
Porto is the northern bank of the Douro River and is very well known for its Port Wine Lodges that have been working since the 17th centuries. A tour and tasting is a must!
The next few days may have been some of the most romantic days of this trip.
Driving West across the steep mountain roads and the demarcated area of Port wine, the couple drove by picture perfect villages.
Getting closer to the their 5-star hotel, the scenery is breathtaking. The Douro Valley carved in terraces and vines lined up in ranks. This is really the heart of the Port Wine country.
Viseu & Coimbra
After a few days, the couple was headed South to Viseu. In the center of Rossio the hand-painted azulejos (ceramic tiles) tell the stories of the people of that region in years gone by.
Further South is Coimbra, the former capital and the main University town in the country.
For their last days in Portugal, Ben and Sophie stayed in Quinta das Lagrimas, home of the love legend of Prince Pedro and Ines de Castro. What a better place to end their honeymoon!
“We had an amazing time on our honeymoon in Portugal, thanks to Finest Journeys.
They were so prepared for every question and need we might have, and were so patient when we wanted to tweak our trip to make it just right.
It was the most magical vacation we have ever been on, and are already planning on saving up for an anniversary trip with them! We are so happy.”
